View Full Version : Logo/Header Contest Rules: Use Web 2.0 Format

DeluxeNames
11-25-2006, 04:36 PM
To celebrate the Grand Opening of WebmasterPost.com, the contest for the new header and logo for DeluxeNames.com & DeluxeHost.com is now open and will end Saturday, December 16th. The winning designs will use the Web 2.0 format as seen in the examples of this thread: http://yh.yayhooray.com/thread/90661/yh-collab:-redesign-famous-logos-in-web-2-0-format?page=1

Web 2.0 format is using rounded corrners, gradient, reflected text (often you see the text being reflected below as if in water), Out-lines (also known as strokes, especailly outlined letters), fun colors, the "shadow" affect (aka: "shading"), and different fonts (not just "ariel" or "times new roman"). This format sometimes gives logos a "shinnyness" to them, but doesn't have to.

To enter, you will be submitting two versions but they will be exactly the same except replace the word "Names" with the word "Host" in your second version. So really, the two versions will be virtually identical. You may submit as many versions as you want. Each and every submission and re-submission you enter will be considered.

I don't like the current design and logo but you can view it at: www.DeluxeNames.com. The current design and colors of the site will be changed to match the winning header so the header should not be based on the current design of the site. The height of the header should be around 116px high and the width should be at least 745px.

I am open to any color choices. My favorite colors are blues, and white but you don't have to restrict yourselves to those colors.

One of the keys to winning is to use a web 2.0 logo, not just the words "DeluxeNames" and "DeluxeHost". This logo could be some abstract rendering of "Deluxe" or just something totally abstract and yet fitting.

Please use this slogan on the "DeluxeNames" header:
"Owning a Domain Means People Can Find You...Anywhere"

Please use this slogan on the "DeluxeHost" header:
"Hosting At It's Best: Quality & Integrity"

The winner will need to provide the layered header image, and logo with a transparent background.

Besides the pride of your art being displayed for all to see at DeluxeNames.com and DeluxeHost.com, you will receive $150 USD via Paypal (from a verified Paypal account). Please post your entry here in this thread and the Moderators (who don't enter the contest) and I will be the judges. The Moderators and I will then review and vote and the winner will be chosen and paid by 11pm EST on Sunday, December 17th.

Just something I happened to be toying with while trying to design a logo for my brother-in-law, who I might be building a small site for soon...
Anyway, when vector graphics, web 2.0 and your old logo combine, I ended up with something like this:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9655/dxlogosdu6.png (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dxlogosdu6.png)

Not going to take on anyone with any actual graphics tallent, but like I said, I just happened to be playing around.

The left one was made using similar techniques, but I found that it created a neat little optical illusion of there being rings or something.

Both are made using incredibly simple methods which basically entail working with ellipses.
All I did was cut out a crescent using two ellipses, flip it, clone the two crescents, edit the clones a little, coloured them, aligned them and added a few simple effects such as the shine and shadows.
These were done in an application which doesn't support .PSD output (Xara Xtreme), so I won't be entering this competition.
Also, I had to link to the full image as ImageShack's method of doing thumbnail images plays havoc with transparent .PNG images :[

Erm, I'm not actually entering as I have no way of providing it in a format you can easily edit as it's saved as .XAR, which is Xara's own vector format.
Xara can export to Illustrator .EPS and .AI formats, but I'm having some trouble getting it to work as it causes Xara to panic and show an error and when I try to load the images, Xara flips out, GIMP can't seem to locate a plugin for the file type and inkscape complains about not being able to find ImageMagick (which I have installed) and it only loads some of the file.

Wow, you work quickly. Good question, I like the slogan you used but change the "me" to a "you": "Owning a Domain Means People Can find You....Anywhere"

Better to spell it with the "e" and do use the ".com": "DeluxeNames.com"

Jon - I loke the idea but personally I'm not sure about the orange and the font. It just doesn't seem to 'sit' right

Kilk - Nice, it's to the point, clear and easy to read.

I really should get my butt in gear and get creative, I'll be creating in PSP though as can't use photoshop :(

If you don't have PhotoShop get GIMPShop, it is a form of The GIMP but modified to make it almost just like Photoshop, and completely free!

Site - http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294

Download for Windows - http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/gimpshop_2.2.8_fix1_setup.exe

Download for Mac OSX -
http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/Gimpshop-OSX-2.2.11.dmg

I have used this program before though I prefer PhotoShop but it is a great free alternative for PS.

Everyone, to save time in feedback, please pay attention to the feedback for Hadriel. Here's whats' good about this header/logo. Do you see how Hadriel has an abstract logo? This is key to winning. No header/logo entry will win without a logo. I've added this to the description in the first post to help:

"One of the keys to winning is to use a nice logo in Web 2.0 format, not just the words "DeluxeNames" and "DeluxeHost". This logo could be some abstract rendering of "Deluxe" or just something totally abstract and yet fitting."

Thanks everyone :)

Welcome to the fourm Digifad and thanks for submitting! :)

I have to tell you, your use of the astronaut on the moon was hilarious and so fitting with the slogan: "Owning a domain means people can find you...anywhere."

You had a logo which is good.

Your one weakness, there's no Web 2.0 format to be found. In other words, I don't see any use of shading, reflection, rounded corners, shinyness, or gradients.

You've got the right idea for sure digifad.

It's great that you used Web 2.0 Kilk! :) I like that reflection that you used of the letters.

Here's the weaknesses:
1) Add some type of logo. Be creative and make it abstract or take the word "Deluxe" and twist it into some stylish art. Then place this logo to the left of "DeluxeNames".
2) The background is good. Maybe it's a little plain. See if you can spruce up the background a little by adding some more texture, or color or design. I don't know but maybe some lines or something.

Great work :)

Lurk, this strikes me as very original, nice work.

Here's what I'd like to see:
1) make the word "names" the same color light blue as you see in the "X"/planet logo. Great idea to use silver rings around the planet as the "X" but make them stand out more as an "X". A little hard to tell at this point.

Great start!

That is a better color Bill for sure, much better than the orange.

Here's suggestions: The text you've chosen for "DeluxeNames" is a little hard to read. Also, maybe use a different font for the slogan.

If you want to, work a little more at the logo, making it a bit more detailed, or interesting.

Overall, your doing good work here.

Now this header has a lot of potential. Your on the right track becuase, I really really like that font and color and the way you desinged the text for "DeluxeNames". That is the best examples I've seen for the "DeluxeNames" text.

I also like the logo, DXN, clever.

The weakness is the background. I can't get into the background. Maybe try it on an all black bacground and then you can give the text "DeluxeNames" a great refelctive effect. Or try any type of background you want.

P.S.: With just 5 more posts you can post URL's :)

I'm fairly busy at the moment, so let me know if it's worth my time continuing with it.
- CBG :)
This style is clever and cool looking CBG. I can think of a lot of types of young people sites this style would be perfect on. However I need the header to appeal to an older, more professional audience.

I wish you would not give up though, I've seen you come in second last time and know you're good at this.

Update: Until December 11th, I will only be online twice as I'm on a cruise ship in the Caribean Ocean (Roayle Caribean) and interenet access onboard is very expensive (Almost $35/hour :o).

I'll probably log back in again in 2 days, sorry for any inconvenience.

Cheers Bryant, it is original, all my own work including the buildings :D

Here's the redo with your suggestions in mind. I think the X is a lot clearer now. I rendered it larger and got some more lights on it (made it a lot clearer once it scaled down) and the text was nice and easy to change (gotta love PS for that)

Good work lurk! You've fixed the "x" and that's better :)

We need the "..." before the word "anywhere" in the slogan if you would. Thanks lurk

I'm not feeling the arrows around the text. Instead, make an original logo that is separate from the text.

FYI for Everyone::::: The person that wins this contest is going to win it on the strength of their logo. If you want to make a great logo, make one like the ones you see in this thread: http://yh.yayhooray.com/thread/9066...0-format?page=1

My favorite two is the "O" of Overstock.com found here: http://yh.yayhooray.com/thread/9066...0-format?page=7
And the Best Buy from page two.

Yours entry is strong digifad. I can't think of any changes at this time. You can submit as many entries as you want to so if you want insurance, take your exact header, and substitute a different logo. Both your original and your version #2 will be entered.

When working on a version #2 logo, I would look at my post above and create something very Web 2.0, the winner will win on the strength of their logo. I'm looking for something abstract but that reflects the nature of "Deluxe". Something that conveys luxury, opulance, rich, the best. I can't tell you how to convey this in a logo but that is the idea. :)

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/2303/deluxe3sj1.jpgThis is a solid contender Dvirhazout. Your logo conveys "Deluxe" and the Web 2.0 sparkle effect you've incorporated is very nice.
I like the reflection of "DeluxeNames", I like your font, I like your colors.

Hi :),

Here is my design.
Good start Statd.

I like the diamond logo but I would remove the globe if I were you.
I really like the reflection of your letters.
I like the sparkle effect you have on the diamond. Maybe add that sparkle effect to the letters of "DeluxeNames" as well.

I like the font and colors you've chosen of your text, however, the letters look too simple. Maybe outline them or incorporate some more web 2.0 effects to make them stand out.

I'm not a fan of the lines you have in this one. I usually do like these lined patterns but not the way you have them.

Overall, a great start and thank you for entering.

Basically, I really like everything on the right side of your banner. I like the world, I like the way you wrote the slogan, I like the colors and texture effects you used.

I would do everything on the left side over again. Redo the way you write "DeluxeNames". I really like the reflection but the font is just not right. Maybe the letters are too skinny or need outlines or something. I wouldn't use the black shape above "DeluxeNames" nor the blue shape below it.

This is the one I like better of the two. This is not the best diamond logo I've seen but it's ok.

I like your font choice and your choice of colors for the text. I like the way you wrote the slogan.

I'm not fond of the city background, I'd try something different there.

This Contest is now over and the results are in:
Believe me when I say that this was the hardest contest in the world to judge as there were 5 great headers we loved.

Nice job to everyone that entered and thank you so much for trying.

Congradulations to Digifad for winning this contest! If you would, please PM me your Paypal email address. Digifad's banners won for several reasons:
1) I'm still laughing at his very creative use of the moon landing to demonstrate the slogan, "Owning a Domain Means People Can Find You...Anywhere." That was a stroke of genius to think of this
Making people laugh will often mean they will remember your product better.

2) Your logo was original and nice.

3) I like your use of colors on the text and background

4) You used the Web 2.0 format very effectively

Thank you to Everyone who entered!
