Duplicate content with menu's

Ive read and been told in the past that having multiple pages with the same content can lead to your site being penalized by the se's.

Is this actually true because a navigation menu for example...it can be consistent across thousands of pages and yet the site does fine...

Any info on this?

how would a se know that it isnt just another content box?

Going into all the details would take ages, but basically G will look at the percentage of content that is duplicated, not what type of content has been duplicated.

As long as you stay somewhere below the 60% mark you should be fine.

But no way would a nav bar trigger it (Unless you are trying to hide extra copy in there).
